Program Overview
The Justice, Law and Criminology (JLC) doctoral program offers an interdisciplinary degree in the School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University (AU).
Every student must declare a first and second field of study.
The first field must be in the JLC section and can be either
In justice or in law and society.
The second field will usually be elsewhere in the school of
public affairs, but may also be in other doctoral degree-granting.
A teaching unit at AU (eg, School of International Service).
Doctoral students may enroll in courses offered at any of the three SPAs
Departments (Government; Justice, Law and Criminology; and
Public Administration and Policy).
With the approval of the academic advisor of the department, students

Grading system
Grades are based on the A-F system and all courses with the exception of JLC-898 and JLC-899 must be taken for a letter grade. Students must maintain a 3.20 GPA.
A provisional grade, at the instructor’s discretion
A student who is passing a course may be given an “Incomplete” but for unforeseeable reasons cannot complete it during the semester.
“Incomplete” is given only in rare circumstances.
Students must correct all “incomplete” grades by the end of
the following semester.
